This is a difficult series to talk about. To be completely honest, I was going through a very difficult period in my personal life and that is the primary feeling I see here as I look back on this work.
I made these in graduate school. My thesis was about utensils and how they had been culturally connected to human form. The first piece, in this series, “Fork V”, reflected my memory of a young Lakota man who wrapped himself in an American flag during the annual Wounded Knee Memorial that I attended in 1980 while working for the Black Hills Alliance. The rest became expressions of personal angst and the desire to be free
